Kamchàtka

Caminart

creation 2023

Caminart is an annual artistic project carried out by different organizations in the Carmel neighborhood of Barcelona that culminates in a night-time artistic walk through the neighborhood with the presence of more than 300 spectators.

In the 2023 edition Kamchàtka, working in collaboration with the associative community of Carmel and its inhabitants, has created and directed a series of ephemeral and moving theatrical actions that illustrate the richness of its past and the stories of its mostly immigrant population.

Project Description

From the Carmel, the views of the city encompass the thousands and thousands of people who have come to the neighbourhood from near and far, on such diverse paths, crossing seas and continents to start a new life here.
All these lives, past and present, are part of the mystery and charm of the neighbourhood, part of the streets, corners and open spaces that we will pass through in this edition of Caminart, places that hold fragments of lives, fragments of paths.

At the invitation of the Centre Civic El Carmel, Casal de Barri La Barracay and Espai Jove Boca Nord Kamchàtka has been asked to direct and coordinate Caminart 2023, addressing for the first time in the history of the project the idea that Caminart is not just a night walk between shows in public space, but is itself a continuous 'show' that tells a story, sometimes fragmented. A story that unfolds along its route and is in continuous dialogue with the space, the public, the local shared memory and the residents and artists who live and work in the neighbourhood. In collaboration with neighbours, artists and local groups who have participated in an intensive 2 afternoon workshop and contributed their personal stories of migration, this edition of Caminart is a path of paths, a meeting of past and present, revealing traces of life of those who arrived long ago mixed with what we see today.

Kamchàtka is an artist collective of diverse nationalities and disciplines who’s members first met in Barcelona in 2006. Driven by the same interests and concerns and under the artistic direction of Adrian Schvarzstein, they started training intensely in group improvisation on the streets of Barcelona and researched the subject of immigration. Barcelona… an ideal city for confronting a society laden with contradictions and immersed in profound problems of integration.

Since 2007, they have created their own poetic language around a trilogy on human migration - Kamchàtka (2007), Habitaculum (2010) and Fugit (2014) and have been performing in more than 30 different countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Their latest creation Alter (2021) is a site specific performance which is intimately linked to the landscape and to interaction with the audience.
In 2023 and 2024 Kamchàtka is working on two special site specific projects which take place in the South of France.
The company also offers the Migrar workshop, a unique human experience around the Kamchàtka performance, for the inhabitants of your city, as well as an indoor production with a Symphony Orchestra of your choice - Music for wild beasts - an approach to classical music for all audiences.
